B&B ELBA ISLAND

PLACES TO DISCOVER

WHERE NATURE AND HISTORY MEET

Come visit our Bed and Breakfast on Elba Island and find out why our island is so named! The ancient Greeks called it Aithàle, Aithàleia, and Aithalìa, three terms meaning “soot,” referring to the iron of which the Elban subsoil was very rich and was already being mined at that time. To the Latins, Elba was famous for the mineralogical treasures that were hidden beneath its soil, and from Aithàle, the name was changed to Ilva, which comes from Ilvati, the people who belonged to Liguria who lived on the island in protohistoric times.

During the Middle Ages the name Ilva became first Ilba and then Helba. Legend has it that Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty, who emerged from the Tyrrhenian Sea to join her beloved Eros on shore, lost the pearl necklace given to her by Paris. Seven of these pearls remained on the surface, forming the seven islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Elba Island is a true paradise and is famous for its crystal-clear sea, history, beaches, cliffs and villages, some true terraces on the sea and others perched on mountains.
